Friends of Charlton Animal Shelter (FOCAS) would like to thank Central MA Disaster Animal Response Team (CMDART) and Valerie Laurence, LPN, for presenting a pet disaster planning and pet first aid workshop on Saturday, March 6, 2016 at the Charlton Grange Hall. Twenty five people from Charlton and surrounding towns learned how to be better prepared in the event of disasters and emergencies involving animals.

JoAnn Griffin, CMDART President, kicked off the workshop providing valuable information on the role of CMDART in the central MA community. Disasters happen locally and affect not only people, but their beloved pets. CMDART plays a very important role in disaster responses that involve animals by educating pet owners, and supporting local emergency response teams, Animal Control Officers, vets, and groups like the American Red Cross. In addition, CMDART offer a number of training opportunities for individuals who want to get involved with animal disaster preparedness and response. CMDART go-kits were given to each attendee and kit contents were reviewed and explained thus helping pet owners be better prepared. Thank you to JoAnn Griffin and CMDART volunteers Ed Hart, Jo-Ann Somers, and Faye Fulone-Sweeney!

Valerie Laurence, LPN, and also a CMDART volunteer, gave a humorous and lively class on how to administer basic first aid to pets in a medical emergency, what to have in a pet first aid kit, and the many ways the items can be used in an emergency. She also demonstrated how to perform the Heimlich maneuver and CPR on pets, offered valuable tips on vital signs, such as how to find a heartbeat and pulse, and reviewed pet anatomy. Participants thoroughly enjoyed Valerie’s presentation and each received a pet first aid kit. Thank you to Valerie Laurence for sharing her knowledge and skills!

FOCAS would also like to send out special thanks to the Charlton Middle School National Junior Honor Society and Southbridge Savings Bank! CMS NJHS held a fundraiser for FOCAS and the proceeds went to purchase the contents of the pet first aid kits! Southbridge Savings Bank generously donated backpacks which were perfect for storing the pet first aid kit items!

To the attendees, we hope you enjoyed the workshop and appreciate your support! For more information on these 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, visit FOCAS at www.focascharlton.org and CMDART at www.cmdart.org.

Sincerely,

FOCAS Board Members - Paul Kolesnikovas, Gail Stokes, Eric Breinlinger, Cindy Zerdecki, Jimmy Falzone, Sarah Trudeau, and Normand Deschenes, and Charlton Animal Control Officers - Ann Sellew and Lisa Westwell

Thank you to EVERYONE who donated to help Lucy. Special thanks to Sarah who is continuing her treatments and adopting her!

Lucy Lucy is a 5ish year old Shepherd mix who was found wandering a back road in Charlton. Thin, missing a lot of fur, and clearly neglected for some time, she was seen by a vet and diagnosed with mange and lyme disease. Never claimed, she has been under the care of Charlton Animal Control. Lucy is on medications for mange and lyme disease and has responded well to treatment. This sweet girl also gets soothing medicated baths twice a week. She has a few weeks of treatment left, but is feeling so much better already. She is in a foster home that will hopefully become her permanent home! UPDATE: June 2012 - Lucy has been officially adopted by her foster family!

Rebecca spent many hours planning the project, collecting supplies, and painting the cat room. The stray cats that come into the shelter will have colorful paintings, cat trees, cat condos, cat beds, and toys to enjoy during their stay. A shelter environment can be very stressful for cats, but Rebecca's project will make their stay more enjoyable in this home-like room!

Thank You Mark Lumbra!

Big thank you to Mark Lumbra for his donation of labor and materials at the shelter. Mark ran his own electrical business for 26 years before heading to Iraq as an electrical contractor. After 30 months, he returned to Southbridge and reopened his business. Mark made the animal shelter his first project and generously completed all the finish electrical work, including installation of all fixtures and switches/outlets for the shelter.

And there's more! Thanks to a generous and skilled anonymous donor, the flooring has been laid and looks fantastic. In addition, the doors and trim have been installed and the kennels have been ordered. There is still a fair amount of interior finish work that needs to be done, the biggest being the epoxy on the concrete floors and the wax on the tile floors.

Please call Brent at 508-294-5800 if you are willing to volunteer!
